Happy New Year!

The New Year’s Eve ride will be to the Hartselle Cracker Barrel at 1909 Uncle Hershel Way SE in Hartselle, leaving the Athens Shell at 10:00 A.M.

New Year’s Day we will be joining a multi-chapter ride in to Wintzell's Oyster House in Guntersville (14455 US Hwy 431 S. Guntersville, AL 35976) we leave the Athens Shell at 9:30A.M. I just looked at the forecast, it is going to be cold and wet, but come anyway! It is an opportunity to fellowship with FRIENDS.

I would like to make a special mention that we are having a Ride Planning Meeting at the home of Kurt and Lynne Chadwick on 7 January at 2 PM.  If you do not know where that is and wish to attend, contact me and I will provide the information.  A big Thank You to them for hosting this.  We normally try to map out the activities for about three months in advance, so we really need the input of the members.

Our monthly meeting will be on 12 January at the IHOP, 16211 Athens-Limestone Blvd., in Athens.  We eat at 6:15 PM, meet at 7:00 PM. Please join us if you can.

We encourage you to invite your friends who ride, to visit our meetings. There is no requirement to own a bike in order to belong to GWRRA and participate in our activities.  The more people we have attending events, the more ideas will be brought forward for future activities.

Ride often, ride safe, have fun.

News from Your District Directors

Frank & Linda Teasley
Alabama District Directors

Greetings fellow riders, Linda and I wish to thank everyone for an exciting year for Alabama GWRRA. We have had some great times this year and we certainly hope you have as well. As we sit here and look forward to 2017 we think about what we would like to accomplish for Alabama GWRRA. First of all is to increase the fun and enjoyment for every member in the District. We have many events already on the schedule and expect many more to be developed in the coming months. Secondly is to increase the membership base throughout the District and Region as well. More members mean more folks participating and the natural progression is everyone has more fun. Fun is what keeps everyone happy and coming back. Let’s make 2017 the year of more FUN!

Coming in January are the annual New Year’s Day rides. Several chapters host rides all across the state and we hope that everyone can make it to one of these. Please check the District website for more info. Next is the first District scrapbook grab for 2017. Chapter D will be hosting the event on Jan 7th at the Western SIzzlin in Oxford, AL from 11AM until 1PM. Remember, this time of year, that you can travel on your bike/trike or in a 4 wheeler and count toward your chapters total. We have been having 4-5 chapters participate; we would like to see other chapters participate as well. This is a fun event and a great time to socialize with other chapters and all your friends that you may not see as much as you would like. Make a resolution to participate more this year and let this event be the kickoff for 2017. You have more FUN the more you participate! The next event in January is the annual Officers Conference to be held Jan 14th at the Gardendale Civic Center. We will begin around 9:30 AM. We would like to see ALL Chapter officers there. This is the one time a year we can all be together to learn more of what is going on in GWRRA and with the Region and the Alabama District. We will have refreshments and door prizes and along the way have a little fun as well. Please make plans to join us.

The 2017 rally season begins in March with the Florida rally. This event will be March 23rd thru the 25th. This is the annual kickoff to the rally season in Region A and the Florida District Team always does a great job and offers a great rally. We hope you will make plans to attend. Please don’t forget the Alabama District Rally in Mobile, Al May 18th thru 20th. We have lots of fun things for you do at the Rally as well as what the city of Mobile has to offer. Please put this FUN event on your calendar.

A very special thanks to the Alabama District Team for a great 2016 and we are looking forward to an even better 2017. Please remember all of our men and women in uniform and their families and all of our first responders and their families. Please take time to say thank you when the opportunity presents itself. Thanks again to all the members of the Alabama GWRRA; we are proud of all of you. If you have any questions or comments please let us know. We always look forward to hearing from you. We hope to see everyone soon,

Frank and Linda Teasley

A Note from Your North Alabama Assistant District Directors

Robert & Gail Brown
North Assistant District Directors

Hello, 2017, and, here we go. As we move forward, what would you, as a member of GWRRA, like us to try in Alabama this year? If you remember, several months ago, I asked for suggestions concerning the Traveling Scrapbook. The Scrapbook offers opportunities for Chapters to ride, visit their friends and have a good time. When all is said, and done, the chapter with the most captures and miles will have their Charter fees paid for a year. What an enjoyable and profitable way to spend some of your riding time.  However, it appears that only a few chapters are taking advantage of this, and it is the same chapters most of the time. If you remember or read the article several months ago, I asked for suggestions which would help get more chapters involved. As of the writing of this article, not one suggestion has been sent to us. So, here is one last chance to make that happen. If you have something you would like to propose, send it to Frank or any District Officer for consideration.

This will be our last article as the Assistant District Directors for North Alabama. We will be stepping out of this position as there are too many plates for us to manage. We will continue in the other positions we hold within the District and Region A. We do appreciate all of our members and all you do.

A Note from Your District Educators

Rider Education/Motorist Awareness

Motorist Awareness Coordinators/District Educators, AL District GWRRA

Although we did not accomplish all I had hoped for this year in the Alabama Rider Education program, I feel we have made progress.  Thanks to some great chapters’ help, we have identified three previously unknown ranges and taught classes in Dothan, Lincoln, and Russellville. Hopefully we can offer even more classes for 2017.

Winter is a good time to complete seminars and Medic-First Aid. I would ask each chapter to inventory their members’ needs, and let us know what you need and a proposed date and place for the seminars to be offered.  I would ask that if instructors are needed from outside the chapter, you give me at least a month’s lead time with two alternative dates.  January is already full, with the Officer’s conference and then a scheduled date with Chapter D.  I would also ask that if you need classes other than Medic First Aid you have two or more classes so we can get maximum value for the instructor’s travels.  If it is Rider Education classes, contact me; if you need Leadership Training, contact Roy and Anita Fosnight; if you need Medic First Aid, contact Robert and Gail Brown.

I hope to see many of you at Wintzell’s on New Year’s Day and others at the Officer’s Conference, but to all of you: Have a happy and safe New Year.

A Note from our Alabama District Membership Enhancement Coordinators

Kenneth & Veronica Campbell
Alabama District Membership Enhancement Coordinators

Veronica and I would like to wish everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

2016 has been a pretty good year for the most of us. Maybe the new year will be even better.

We have done a good job recruiting this past year, but we need to improve on retention. We still had a loss as far as members. A lot of them were the one to two year members. We failed somewhere in getting them involved. Did we make a good contact when they joined and never did a follow up or did they come to a meeting and felt out of place? We all need to work on this.

The next couple of months are going to be slow as for riding and outdoor activities, now is a good time to set up some seminars with the educators. CD’s get with your neighboring chapters and have a big class or two together.

Remember the district Rally will be in Mobile in May. The theme is sitcoms. Start getting an act together for the talent shows or costume shows.

For the chapter theme challenge do dioramas of your choice use your imagination?

This year we will have a line on the windshield Cover score sheet for the owner’s name. Last year we multiple members in the same chapter competing. This should help the judges.

We have three chapters that sent in news letters to be judged. They were put in the mail the 12th they are off to where it is really cold, but the couple judging them says they will get them back to me before the 1st.

There is still plenty of time to get chapter of the year packets to me.

This is getting a little long and I am late as usual.

Please stay in out of the cold and damp air, we don’t want anyone getting sick.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
