Happy New Year!

For the information of anyone who was not at our Christmas Party, we have some new officer announcements.  Jerry and Melissa Rodgers have accepted the position of Assistant Chapter Directors.  If they are as dedicated in that position as they have been in Membership Enhancement, they will be fabulous.  Larry Bradley has accepted the position of Chapter Treasurer, thank you Larry.  Floyd McQueen has agreed to learn the ropes as Chapter Educator, thanks Floyd.

The other important event that took place at the Christmas Party was the announcement of Floyd and Audrey McQueen as the Alabama Chapter H Couple of the Year for 2016.  Congratulations Floyd and Audrey for all of the work you guys have done over the past year to make the Chapter a success.

Along with the announcement of the new officers, I would like to give my sincere thanks to Steve and Shirley Kremer for their service to me and the chapter as Chapter Educator and Chapter Treasurer.  I hope you can soon join us on rides again. Your willingness to take on the jobs when I was in need of help is sincerely appreciated.

For New Year’s Eve, Jerry and Melissa are hosting a party at their home. On New Year’s Day I hope the chapter will all join us on a multi-chapter journey to Wintzell's Oyster House  in Guntersville -- (14455 US Hwy 431 S. Guntersville, AL 35976) we will depart from the Athens Shell station at US-72 and I-65 at 9:00 AM. Several Alabama Chapters plan to participate, and they have a separate room set aside for us.

I look forward to the coming year, building more friendships and encountering new adventures.  It is not too early to start planning your travels to rallies and to Wing Ding in Billings Montana.  Jump right in, it can be a blast if you let it.

News from Your District Directors

Frank & Linda Teasley
Alabama District Directors

Greetings fellow riders, Linda and I hope you had a very special holiday season. With the end of one year brings on hopes and desires for the New Year. We hope that 2016 will bring you and your family much happiness, peace and prosperity. As we look forward to a new year we hope you have many plans already made for the riding season. Wing Ding this year will be in Billings Montana. We are certainly looking forward to the trip and we hope many of you are as well.

The first ride of the New Year for many will be a trip with your chapter and perhaps several others on a New Years Day ride. Several chapters have events scheduled and we hope that if your chapter does not have one planned you will make plans to join one of the other rides. All of them sound like fun. You can check the District website for info on all the scheduled rides. Hope to see everyone there. The second event of the year will be our annual Officers Conference on Jan 16th at the Gardendale Civic Center. We would request that all chapter officers attend but any other member that is interested may also attend. There will be several reminders sent out to the CD’s before then. Please remember that End of Year Financial statements are due that day. If you need any help in that area please contact Sara Leach.

We hope everyone had a great 2015. We certainly had a great time this year and are eagerly looking forward to 2016. Please remember the families of members who were lost during 2015 and keep them in your prayers. Also, please remember all of our men and women in uniform, first responders, and all of their families. They serve and protect us each day. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in 2016.

Gail and I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Santa brought you all the things you wanted/needed.

At our Region A Officers meeting in December, we agreed that our motto for 2016 is “Encouragement.”  If you look encouragement up in a dictionary, you will find many definitions.  Here are two of them:  “Act of giving support, confidence, hope; the act of trying to stimulate the development of an activity, state, or belief.”  Both of these are good, and we can apply them to our chapters going into the New Year. Chapter Directors; please encourage chapter members to participate with the chapter and the activities as much as possible. Chapter members; please encourage your chapter director and your chapter team by remembering to thank them for what they do. Encouragement works both ways.

If any of the chapters need a Medic First Aid class, please have your Educator contact us so we can assist you in setting one up for your chapter. We know that, due to the Safety Weekend being cancelled, several members need this to update their levels. A minimum of 12 members are needed to make up a class.  If you need to combine with another chapter to accomplish this, please do so. The time to get this done is during the winter months when rides are few.  Give us a call and let us know where and when you would like to set up the class.

Thanks again for all you do.

Rider Education/Motorist Awareness

A brand new year!  I hope you have all weathered the holidays safely, and in good health.  This is the time of the year that it seems the activity of chapters seem to drop off because of weather that just isn't pleasant to ride in. My question is "What activities are good during the winter months, that you just don't find time for in the spring, summer, and fall?" I know, a lot of chapters get together for game nights, or make plans for summer trips, but I am thinking of activities that are a little more mundane.  How about having training sessions for the chapter?

Alabama is blessed to have trainers available in Leadership, Medic First Aid, and various seminars, as well as riding courses.  What classes would be helpful for your chapter?  I know I would much rather spend a day when the weather is rainy and cold inside in classes than one that is sunny and warm.  The good weather is more conducive to being on my bike, the bad weather is better to being indoors with friends learning skills that can make the outdoor activities safer and more enjoyable. If your chapter doesn't have a seminar presenter, contact me and I will try to find one that can be available on the dates you need them.

Some of the Rider Education seminars are (primary source - the Rider Education Program Handbook):

Core Rider Ed Seminars (these are on Seminar Completion Cards or Riding Course Completion Cards)
    •  Co-Rider (CRS, CRV – video version)
    •  Motorcycle Crash Scene Response (MCSR)
    •  Motorcycling for Mature Riders (MMR)
    •  Team Riding (TRS)
    •  Trailering (TS)
    •  Road Captain Course (RCC) (contains both classroom and riding components)

Other Rider Ed Seminars
    •  Co-Rider Two (CRTS) – this seminar is NOT a part of the Levels Program
    •  High Siding (HSS)
    •  Riding with New and/or Inexperienced Riders (RWN)
    •  Running Mountains, Hills and Curves (RMHC)
    •  Going, Going, Gone (GGG)
    •  Riding in the Heat (RDH)
    •  Night Riding (NR)
    •  Dealing with the Elements (DDE)
    •  Helmet Myths (HM)

Motorist Awareness Seminars:
    •  Think Motorcycles
    •  Share the road

I would also like to ask every chapter to be looking for suitable place to conduct riding courses. If you find sites that are suitable, flat, free of obstacles, with a well maintained surface, and able to be blocked off from other traffic, nominate it to me and I am more than willing to come check it out. We have to get permission from the property owner and provide them with assurance that we will do no damage to their facility.

Ride safely, ride often, call a friend.

Carl

Well the New Year is here and I am still stuck in the old one. Just cannot get used to doing my article in the middle of the month.
I hope everyone has or had a very MERRY CHRISTMAS, hope Santa came to see everyone.
Ok now for busyness we have had a good year as for as recruiting new members. We finished the year with a good gain thanks to Wing Ding being in our home state. Next year we will have a big loss if we do not get all those new members active in a chapter and make them want to remain members. One of them may be your next CD or ACD I don’t know of any Chapter that does not need new members just for that reason. We have a lot of folks holding multiple positions to keep a chapter going that should not have to.
It is that time of year when some may step down from a position. Just a reminder the chapter MEC does not change with a new CD unless they want to step down or the incoming CD wants his or her own Chapter MEC. CD’s remember you are responsible for your chapter if you do not have a MEC you are responsible for doing the MEC’s job.
CD’s if you’re stepping down pass this on to your incoming CD. If there are new incoming MEC’s please send me their information so I can have it ready for signing at the officers conference in JAN. If you plan on doing it please use the newest forms, they are on the GW web site. Please print or use the on line forms to fill out and print. The new MOU’s need to be signed by both husband and wife or vice versa depending on which will be the chapter MEC. Also both should appear on the application to receive the patches and pins. Bring Applications and MOU’s to the meeting. All MEC’s old and new should be at the officer’s conference as there will be some changes for the next year.

I won't bore you anymore today.
  HAPPY NEW YEAR
